September 2006

Irma Perez, Cedar Valley’s Literacy Coach, received the “Educator of Excellence” award from Washington State University.

 

Fall 2006

Creative Communications Poetic Achievement Award—13 fourth-grade students were published in the “Celebration of Young Poets Anthology”.

 

READY-SET-GOALS

Fifth graders did a video conference with Seahawks receiver, Nate Burleson, and a fifth-grade class in Eastern Washington.

 

November 2006

Cedar Valley third-grade students were recipients of individual dictionaries in the Kent Rotary Dictionary Project.

 

December 2006

Doug Lapp, fifth-grade teacher, received his Masters in Science Education from Walden University.

 

January 2007

Irma Perez and Joy Kawaoka, Cedar Valley’s Literacy Coach and Kindergarten/KAI teacher, respectively, received their ELL endorsements from the University of Washington.

 

February 15, 2007

Dr. Mona Lake Jones (Poet Laureate) conducted an assembly celebrating Black History Month.

 

February 27, 2007

Mrs. Boden’s sixth-grade students did a dramatic presentation at the 14th Annual King County Superior Court—Tribute to Thurgood Marshall.

 

Amber Randall (Mr. Robinett’s 5th/6th-grade class) received a 1st place award for an outstanding entry in the Thurgood Marshall Essay Contest.

 

March 15 & 19, 2007

Sue Young, bilingual storyteller, conducted a Parent’s Night program and student assembly, telling stories and singing songs from Mexico and Central America.

 

April 20, 2007

Thirteen Cedar Valley students’ poems were accepted for publication in the 2007 Young America Poetry Digest.  The poems were submitted by Mrs. Taylor.

May 7, 2007

Student, Mari Martinez, received the 2007 Academic Awareness Award for her commitment and dedication to personal and academic excellence.  This award is sponsored by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s office.

 

May 18, 2007

Greg Rish, PE Teacher, received the Educator of the Year Award given by Lewis and Clark State College Alumni Association.

 

May 29, 2007

Cheryl Taylor, CV Librarian, received the John Stanford Scholarship to pursue her library endorsement.

 

June 1, 2007

Cedar Valley’s “Battle of the Books” team tied for 5th place at the district-wide competition.

 

Cedar Valley students surpassed the goal of reading 275,000 minutes, by reading a total of 293,000 minutes. This means Mrs. Wilkerson “Rocked the Roof” in front of the student body on Wednesday, June 20.

 

Cedar Valley was the recipient of “SOAR”—Getting School Ready grant to prepare 3 and 4 year olds for kindergarten.

 

June 8th & 11th

Covington Community Sports donated sports balls to each Cedar Valley family.

 

June 2007

A photograph of Cedar Valley Principal, Rhonda Wilkerson, and 1st-grade student, Maleya Alvarez, along with her dad, Karl MadPlume, will be featured on the front cover of the Kent School District calendar for 2007-08.
